Some trees fruit within a year, while most bear fruit 2 to 4 years after planting. Most fruit trees require another compatible variety for cross-pollination and fruit production however, to save room and still get fruit, choose self-pollinating fruit trees. Tender fruit trees, like citrus and tropical trees, can be planted in pots and brought indoors for winter protection. Fruit trees can be planted any time of year as long as the soil is not frozen and the temperatures have not reached their peak heat.
